IT’S A SMALL WORLD WITH A BIG HEART
National Nursing Home Week is May 8-14

(New Roads-May 2, 2016) No one wants to get older, yet it happens. Since we are all on a journey with the same destination, perhaps now is a good time to reach out to a loved one, family member or neighbor who is old, disabled, or both. Staying in touch can make a tremendous difference in the world for someone living at a nursing facility.

Imagine an event that brings our long-term care community of residents, rehab patients, families and nursing facility staff together for a fun fair in 2016. In fact, let’s plan on an event in May, say around Mother’s Day, May 8 or the week of May 8 to 14, which also just happens to be National Nursing Home Week.
The theme for the National Nursing Home Week this year is “It’s a Small World, with a Big Heart” and it has two parts:

  • It partially commemorates the New York World’s Fair of 1964-1965 and two songs from that era:  Disney’s “It’s a Small World After All” and the New Seekers’ “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing.”
  • “…with a Big Heart” symbolizes staff embracing the resident as a person and offering individualized care, social interaction, and a compassionate heart.

Now is a good time to tour Lakeview Manor Nursing Home and see that nursing facilities are, indeed, small worlds operating at the pace of older adults, i.e. residents. Expect to like what you see because today’s nursing facilities, clinical practices, and staff capabilities have advanced in the last decade.

For visitors, the music component of the theme reminds everyone that reliving events and listening to favorite tunes helps older adults reminisce-think of it this way, an 80-year-old today was a strapping 29-year-old in 1964. When visiting a nursing facility, plan to bring a family photo album, scrapbook, news clippings or another item that recalls yesteryear for the resident.

Our staff and residents hope you can plan to visit Lakeview Manor Nursing Home during that week. Your being here will help make Nursing Home Week a special time and help our residents feel a part of the community.

Sincerely,
